“The Briar Patch Philosopher” is a collection of wise sayings that are simple to remember. One of my favorites that I learned from my dad was, “Even the good will of a bad dog is worth something.” We all face bad dogs in our work places, in our families and with our friends. By getting the good will of bad dogs on your side, you make the dog’s biting you very difficult. Another of my favorite sayings from “The Briar Patch Philosopher” is, “Suffering leads to patience, patience leads to perseverance, perseverance leads to character, character leads to strength, strength leads to courage, and courage produces a happy life.” We generally fail to understand why we suffer mentally, physically and/or emotionally. But once we learn what suffering is teaching us, then we can go through it and come out of it better than we’ve been. Life is a relatively simple game to play. All we have to do is to strive each day to be better than we’ve been the day before. You can use this philosophy to achieve almost any goal. In the briar patch of life, you'll encounter thorns, hurts, disappointments, various trials, danger and missteps all along the way. Also, in the briar patch of life, you’ll find the true virtues that are necessary - courage, endurance, patience, faith and wisdom. If you're willing to run through the briar patch and the fires of everyday living, and you rely heavily on courage, endurance, patience, faith and wisdom, you can have a happy, successful, prosperous and meaningful life. I've always told my children, “You can learn from the lumps on my head, or you can put those same lumps on your head.” The easiest way to get through the briar patch is to learn from the wisdom of others. The most-difficult way to get though the briar patch is to run through the storms, fall in the holes and get hurt, sick, disoriented and discouraged like many do. If you pay attention, the route to wisdom has the right answers for all questions before they're even asked. Wisdom can tell you which road to take, what type of employment to seek, and whether or not to test an idea or try a new business. Wisdom also can teach you when to keep your mouth shut, when to charge into danger with reckless abandon and how to be courageous. To become courageous, you must face and overcome any fear you have about anything. Once you obtain courage and face life unafraid is when you'll find true happiness. Like anyone else, I don’t always do the right thing. However, these sayings help me to recognize my mistakes and often prevent me from making the same mistake again. I’m not the briar patch philosopher. I'm just the rabbit who’s gone into the briar patch and tried to learn from all who have ventured into the briar patch and come out on the other side. Hopefully like me, you'll learn some wisdom to live by, gain some strength to endure and find the courage to put a smile on your face from “The Briar Patch Philosopher.”

John Phillips has been the most prolific outdoor writer in the history of the world. In the 1980s, 1990s and for the start of this century he was writing 200 and more magazine articles a year - that's print articles. He has discovered and e-Books, and he's taking that market by storm. Being prolific is one thing, but further, what John writes is very good stuff. No wonder he has won so many writing laurels. The Briar Patch Philosopher is a bit of a switch from the subjects Phillips normally writes about, but this one comes off beautifully. Readers find one zinger of philosophy after another - and from many varied subjects. These zingers or philosophies are lessons in life to live by so readers will continue to find gems throughout that can help change their lives - to become better workers, better parents, better persons. Further, this is not a one-time read book. Read it now in an evening. Pick it up again a week or a month from now and re-read. Pick it up a year from - and re-read. The content is that good. John Phillips gives us a group of homey truisms that are both interestesting, and have much gruth contained in them. They are presented in a homely fashion but they are nontheless capable of great truths. Here is one of my favorites "I am the only person who can make me happy or sad, and I will not give that right to anyone else." So true and untrue is the statement by many, "see what you made me do". We are responsible and cannot give that responsibility for our reactions away.
Read the book in an afternoon and ws chuckling and nodding throughout.

I absolutely loved this book. I enjoy looking up quotes and little anecdotes to help me get through the day, for inspiration, or for emotional validation. If you also like reading quotes and little words of wisdom, this is a must have book for your library. Written in a cute font with breaks in between each saying, the book is easy to read and I wanted to tab nearly every page. If I had highlighted a hard copy it would have quickly begin to look like a book of neon yellow, pink, and green. There are so many wonderful sayings in here that I will definitely be using to help others during their time of happiness, sadness, excitement, etc.
This is a great book for teenagers to have. Open their minds to think differently and deeper.
I was provided this book for my review and I'm sincerely thankful for the opportunity.
People who read The Briar Patch Philosopher will something which resonates.
For me, it was two passages on children
"Every kid needs the advantage of growing-up poor. One of the biggest misconceptions in our society is "I don’t want my kids to have it as bad as I did." Growing up poor teaches great lessons and makes a youngster strong. Life is not fair!! All you have to do to survive is to do the right thing."
"The strongest fledglings are pushed out of the nest first, and the weakest birds stay the longest."
John Phillips offers his thoughts in a short, easy-to-read volume. You may not agree with every single word. In that case, take what you want and leave the rest.
I've read all the quotes in this wonderful book, and every now and then, I find myself looking through the wonderful passages, that shares thoughts about life, courage, love, children and God. I find this collection very useful in helping me control my emotions and broaden my outlook in life. My favorites are
"Feelings change, Truth remains."
"Embrace fear, because it is an excellent motivator."
"Life is a race. The beginning, we can't control, and the end can't be determined. But how well we run in the middle is all that counts. "
"There are only three securities in life - your relationship with the Good Lord, what you can do with your hands, and what you can do with your mind."
Quotes that are very well said. I think this one book really the most meaning to me, since I've been living a life full of insecurities. It's time to change that now. I'm so thankful to John E. Phillips for sharing with me this wonderful collection of his. Quotes that help heal one's wounds, quotes that are meant to make you feel better, quotes that open your mind, quotes that help you bring yourself closer to God. All beautiful quotes. I can only have great words for this book.
